PROJECTS
Garage BandName Projectfor the name projects we made a recording of our name using the sampler. we then used a keyboard to record a rhythm of our name. then we added a bass loop, drums, and guitar to complete the song.
Spooky Sounds
for spooky sounds we had to make a
containing sounds and tunes from instruments that sound scary. I used the sampler and made a cough sound. you can change the pitch and make it really low. that made the cough sound like a monster growl. I used smart strings to make a siren type sound that was very erie. I used the drums to make a heart beat sound. over all it seemed spooky enough for me |
Other AppsMad Pad
we used random items in the classroom to record short sounds with mad pad. then used the sounds to create songs. I used a table to create my sounds by knocking, banging, rocking and other things.
App Smashfor the app smash project we worked in groups and used multiple apps to create the final project. first Evan used smart strings to make a cool intro, Jake Putty made a cool ending using thumb jam, and Megan and Beau made sound effects at the end using garage band sampler , I narrated the story using sonic pics. I also added pictures to help describe the story as I spoke.

Rockstar Drummer
The rock star drummer project was obviously a project using drums, we used the drums part of garage band. We learned the names of the different parts of the drum set and had to incorporate the different parts in our recording. since we are not pro drummers we could not just do a cool drum beat all at once. Ms. Chase showed us how to layer the song using merge recording, you do one part at a time and press record before every new part. Ms. Chase also showed us that by holding two fingers on a drum it provided a consistent steady beat. I made two drum recordings one using the live rock drum set and the other using the drum machine. The live rock drum process I took started with a simple beat on the base drum, after that i pressed stop recording at the beginning again then for each part I pressed record and stop recording separate. I did the same thing with the drum machine but it is set up like a grid and you press the squares to play the specific sound. Some problems I had with this project was it took some time to find things that would sound good together, but i think i got that all squared away. The other thing was each song had an A and a B part. when i played the A part it would keep looping instead of Playing B. they still both worked but I had to manually scroll to part B and press play. I enjoy the live rock drums or classic drums a lot more than the drum machine and i also think my live rock drum song sounded the best between the projects.
12 Bar BluesFor the 12 bar blues I made the song using the I I I I/IV IV I I/ V IV I I progression, the song was in the key of C.
I used auto play on smart guitar for the progression using the acoustic version. Then a smart bass was added using auto play, I decided to use the upright acoustic bass. For the drums of this project I used Vintage kit smart drums and did a simple beat using a few parts of the kit. The solo in my song also uses the acoustic guitar playing notes in the minor blues scale. I wanted the song to sound like acoustic blues style, it didn't turn out exactly how I Imagined it but i still liked it in the end. the one thing I wish I could have added to the song would have been a harmonica solo. Unfortunately garage band does not have a harmonica I'm glad we did this project because I learned the 12 bar blues progression now i can try this progression on my guitar at home.

Singing FingersFor the singing fingers project we had to create a story out of the app. my story I created was about Evan eating me in class. How it works is you drag your finger across the screen as you talk. the lines it makes change color according to the sound of your voice. when you drag you finger over the lines you made it plays your voice back in the direction you go. At first I didn't really get how the app worked or what it was supposed to do, but after messing around with the app more I understood most of it.
Thing Link Drum Sethttp://www.thinglink.com/scene/703237046990274560
The thing link project was an interesting one. we used the garage band drum set to create a interactive picture. You hold down your finger and a small circle apears. You can add text, video, YouTube video, etc... So I labeled each drum on the drum set and learned the names of all the parts. After labeling them I added a video saying the name of the specific drum and playing its sound. With the think link app it makes it easy to create a fun, creative, and Interactive photo that can display something you've done or teach something to other people, or could be anything you else. One thing I didn't like is it didn't seem like there were a diversity of things you could add to a project it seemed limited but it could have been me. Overall I like the app and would use it again in the future.
Thumb Jam Loop
Thumb jam is a very cool app in my opinion. It has many different instruments and options to choose from, but still has a simple easy to use setup. you can really make some cool sounding things without putting a lot of thought into it and if you do put thought into it it will sound even better.
Loopy BeatboxFor the beat box project we had to create a beat box rap using loopy HD. there are grey discs that record different tracks, you press the disc and wait for the orange line to go around then it turns orange. Once it turns orange you can make your first beat. There are six discs that you can record a beat on and if that's not enough you can drag a disc over and merge it to another one. For this one we did six beat box beats to make a little rap. it didn't turn out great for me, I'm not into rap or beat boxing so this project was definitely out of my comfort zone. Even though it was uncomfortable I still had fun working on it. I still find my self beat boxing the words boots and cats from the beat box handout Ms. Chase gave us. One of the reasons I felt uncomfortable doing this is I'm not really a rap person. I think my recording would have been better if I carried the i pad around with me all day and recorded it in the moment. Because if you want to catch me singing or beat boxing it has to be in the moment.
DM1 Drum MachineWhen i first opened the DM1 drum machine app I felt a little overwhelmed. there are many settings and functions to choose from. Ms. Chase gave us a run through with the app which made it easier to understand the app.
we had to make two songs with the app. Upon exploring the app I found out how cool the app is. It has a lot of drum machines and many acoustic sets too. We also learned how to inter twine apps in garage band, we exported our songs from the drum machine and brought it to garage band. Overall I give the app rated as cool.
Symphony Pro Vs. NotateMe Now
The main difference between these apps is how you put the notes in. Symphony pro provides a keyboard, guitar, and bass guitar to play the notes desired. NotateMe Now requires you to write the notes in and it transfers them to digital. Personally I like Symphony pro the best, it seems easier to navigate and create things. I like the fact that you play an instrument on the app that makes the notes. The downfall to that is you have to know what notes your playing on the guitar or the keyboard. That is the advantage to NotateMe Now. If you don't Know the notes on the instrument you can write them in and you can more easily make more complicated notes when the app learns you writing. NotateMe Now is supposed to learn your writing as you make projects. it was frustrating when you try to write a note 4 or 5 times and the app wont pick anything up. Overall each app has advantages and disadvantages and are both useful for making your own music.

Final Song
final_song.m4a | |
File Size: | 5574 kb |
File Type: | m4a |
My final song is complete. It includes an intro, verse 1, verse 2, chorus, bridge, and outro. this is the first time a created a structured song like this. For this song song we had to incorporate many of the apps we used before this project. Garage Band was used as the main program for the song and all the apps and tracks were put into there. I added DM1 drums using audio bus and i also used audio-bus to add my thumb jam track. A problem I found with thumb jam is it is hard to make the instruments match up with the garage band ones as far as sound goes. Thumb Jam was my least favorite track to add to the song. What I did like was DM1 drum machine. You can make a cool customized drum track that is your own. I would have to say my absolute favorite part of the song was the sampler I added in the beginning. I added samples of my voice and deepened it and it sounds super cool. I was very pleased with the outcome of my song and I think it got the style and sound i was looking for.
